You couldn't have meant "waving"? Dispensing with the faith response hardly sounds like what he meant. And Africa is not a country--how often have we struggled with that perception when talking about our lives?

I remember an assignment in one of Vaughn's classes in Garrett: The students tried to come up with solutions to the Middle East's conflict between Palestinians and Israelis. He came up with one--that would never work. But he also developed a much greater awareness of the problems in the Middle East.

The greater danger today in the USA is that we will conclude that Zambia's (for example) problems have nothing to do with us. Listening to WITF I heard one caller talking about how we should abandon Pakistan and Afghanistan to their own devices. Deeply troubling.Climenheisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01989459133238230712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31402520.post-50348248988328568842013-10-22T18:45:54.979-04:002013-10-22T18:45:54.979-04:00Great idea. I wish I had thought of it when teaching world issues. The terminology is confusing, but I think most people still understand first world-third world best, even if the second world have disappeared.Anvilcloudhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07974744042579564912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31402520.post-32542995715227416972013-10-22T06:27:38.053-04:002013-10-22T06:27:38.053-04:00That idea was brilliant Donna. It's just funny to me how, as long as we have a vested interest in a region, we're "concerned" about what goes on there. In other places, we turn our eyes and let injustice and persecution happen. It's wrong and it's sad. What happened to "I am my brother's keeper?" Oh, that's right... only if my brother has oil reserves.Jaynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14057094040409159429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31402520.post-89586077547999969352013-10-22T00:01:22.841-04:002013-10-22T00:01:22.841-04:00What a great project! The term "first world ...What a great project! The term "first world problem" has become something even my teen uses to fuss over those moments in our day when our tech isn't providing solutions fast enough. Like when my espresso machine is producing mediocre brew at exactly the same time that my iPhone stops seeing the wifi signal in my house. If I complain, she'll shake her head at me and my "first world problems." :)

I love that you made these kids think beyond themselves and look for solutions . . . even if they don't really exist.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02776482696203224923noreply@blogger.com
