H-E-L-P Part II

OK--I have great news. I have my own laptop back. Yay! So, now I can find all the favorite places I have marked--that is, all my blog friends. I have been trying to remember blog names and go out reading based on that, but I know I have missed some.

I am very sad to read this post from Possumlady Place. Stop by, and leave a message for her.

Now, to the H-E-L-P subject.

I got an email from a friend who needs ID help on a bird that landed in a friend's front yard. You know me, I am woeful at bird IDing.

Here's a photo. Or two. . .

Anyone know what it is?
----------------
Thanks to Philip at Tossing Pebbles: it's a muscovy duck--a breed of somewhat domesticated duck. Told you I didn't know my birds. Here's a Wikipedia link on them.

No idea - very interesting, though. I'll look forward to the birders replies.

I would give a smart answer like a duck, but I know that's not what you want.

It is a male Muscovy duck. They are lovely useful birds. They are more of a land duck you don't need a pond for them. They will swim and bath in one if available. There meat is quite distinct from other ducks. They eat lots of flies. They can be used in a livestock barn to keep the flies in check. http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/poultry/ducks/muscovy/

They are very loyal. I had a pair and the female died. The male sat with her corpse for three days. Finally, he left to feed and I managed to remove the female.

Awww. I know what happened but I can't open Possumlady's page! Darn!

I am glad tossing pebbles knew the bird. I was going to suggest "duck" of some sort or magpie or rock dove :o?

I'm glad you've got your laptop back, Donna.

Thanks for the ID on the Muscovy Duck (I didn't know what kind it was either)

To all--thanks for the help with IDing the muscovy. Philip and Elizabird with Tom weighing in too.
Welcome, Elizabird.

How sweet of you to post about me Donna. Thank you very much. It's been a very tough week made a little easier by all the kind words.
