Yes, We can!

So, we watched election returns beginning at 7 p.m.

We watched to see how Pennsylvania voted.

We talked with our daughter who was having an election returns party in London, with her fiance and some American friends.

We were awake at 11 p.m. when all the networks announced the results--President Elect Obama.

And we watched at midnight when President Elect Obama challenged us all to remember that we can overcome the problems that face us, that we can work together, that we can change history.
"Yes, we can."

Yes, we can. What a night. There's a lot of work ahead but it's nice to have a vision.

I finally turned off the tv and turned off the lights around 1:30 this morning and was still wide awake! Hopefully I will be able to get more sleep tonight. We have a tough road ahead but I feel we will be all right. Stress continues to slowly pour out of me.

I woke this morning with a new feeling of hope and optimism I haven't felt in a long time. As if a cloud or weight had lifted!

I was up till 2 a.m. reading blogs and watching MSNBC. I was too excited to sleep.

I was too excited to sleep, too!
I though I would collapse with relief, but I was so moved by his acceptance speech that I lay awake for a long while afterward.
This will be very exciting.
I'm glad to be able to watch.

We followed the results over here in Germany too--and yesterday our clock radio woke us up to Obama's acceptance speech. Good start to the day!

It was such a moving, and historical moment. I kept the faith, and am more than pleased that he'll get this opportunity.

Such a good feeling. I kept my kids up to watch the speeches. Of course, it was 3 hours earlier here so they weren't up too too late! :)

I am sure many American's are feeling a great weight has been taken from their shoulders. Their is a new hope for a better future.

I am reminded of the election of John Kennedy ( revered in Canada a "our President) and the feeling of a new age coming, sadly cut short by the first of a series of assassinations which cost my generations it heroes and hope.

I cried like a BABY. It was an insane mixture of relief, elation, exhaustion and the knowledge that we have just seen History being made.
Unreal. I love it.

Donna,

Thanks for your comment on by blog.
This evening, as you were commenting I was reading a very interesting article in The American Scholar, by English Professor Charles Johnson on the need for a new narrative for Black Americans, moving away from the narrative of victimization to the narrative goal of Dr. King in his I have a Dream Speech. http://www.theamericanscholar.org/su08/narrative-johnson.html

I recommend this article to you and your students as a way to understand the possibilities Barack Obama represents for Black Americans to understand themselves with a new narrative.

How does his election alter white America's narrative of itself would make another interesting article.

This is my way of saying, I think your comment was correct.
