The Wanderer Returns

My daughter and I have a tradition that we started (on her recommendation) several years ago. When either of us goes to visit a country, we pick an author and a book that gives us a glimpse into that country.

I was a bit slow on the selection for Greece--so I ended up picking Homer's The Odyssey--perfect choice. The story of Odysseus and his tortuous attempt to return home after the Trojan war is a perfect metaphor for a tourist traveler.

We are back! Like Odysseus, we saw much of the Greek countryside, including many islands. We didn't trace his steps precisely, nor did we encounter the Cyclops, or Circe, or the sirens. We didn't have Athena running interference for us--although, come to think of it, Athena might be a proto-type for a tour director.

Hmmmm--well, that's all for now. Tomorrow--unpacking, laundry, down-loading photos, recovering from jet lag. And then, the blogging will begin!
