Travelin' On

When I was a student in college--way back in the 1960s (this fact may be essential to understanding part of this story)--I attended a small church-related liberal arts college W-A-Y out in the country. Not really near anything.

The nearest food place, other than the college dining hall (which at that time served ONE entree--you ate what you were served), was a local diner. No fast food place. No pizza delivery. Nothing. I thought I was on easy street, one year in college, when my then boyfriend drove a potato chip delivery truck and would bring me the occasional tin of chips. Seriously.

Anyway, to get to the point--among our group of college girlfriends, there was ONE girl who had a car. A CAR. The most essential possession. And she was generous with her car--not loaning but in driving us to the nearest town where we went to shop and, of course, to that local diner.

The point of this extended recollection is that frequently on these trips, we would get to singing. Raucously, at the top of our lungs, singing in 4 part (OK--3 part) harmony. One song we loved to sing was "This World is Not My Home." A rocking hill-billy type religious song that you could blast out. But the words were always to alien to me. . .

This world is not my home, I'm just passing through.
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue.
The angels beckon me from Heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore.

Chorus
O Lord you know I have no friend like you
If Heaven's not my home, then Lord what will I do?
The angels beckon me from Heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore.

I didn't like that approach to living--we are living in the here and now only temporarily and grudgingly? We are just short termers on this earth? If that's true--why not just skip this earth and go directly to the next life?

I much prefer the idea of enjoying this life, exploring fully what there is time and resource to explore. I do FEEL at home in this world. Very much so.

So, OK--the title of this blog. We are travelin' on. I will be gone from this blog site for a couple of weeks. Not going to tell you where we will be, but here's a hint.

Oh, and yes, I will blog about the trip upon our return.

Enjoy your travels. Curious -- that song expresses my own feelings much more than it does yours. Not in every way; but in all the countries I have lived in they all feel like home and they all feel like something short of home. "Singabahambayo thina kolumhlaba; siyekhaya ezulwini." At home -- and not yet.

You should slip dpown to Taize while you're there. A quick train ride to Macon on the TGV and then the bus across to the village of Taize. not your cup of tea (too English, that metaphor?) maybe, but a neat place.

BTW: I thought your top book was always about your upcoming trip. Could it be that you are looking for God on this one? :)

I always had a choice at the university cafeteria -- eat it or not.

Good thoughts about life. Let's enjoy it.

And enjoy your trip.

I feel at home in this world too, even on bad days. It's all just part of the picture, and what a lovely picture it is.
